Casey Butler (they/them) joined the Student Center for Equity & Inclusion (SCEI) in July 2022 as the Associate Director of LGBTQ+ Campus Life. They hold a graduate degree in Sociology within the Gender, Sexuality, & Society track from the University of Amsterdam, where they specialized in queer theory, ethnographic methods, and performance studies.
For the past decade, Casey has dedicated their professional and volunteer work to serving LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. Prior to joining UR, Casey worked as the Community Engagement Coordinator at the LGBT Life Center in Norfolk, served as a Youth Development Volunteer at the Peace Corps in Thailand, and coordinated first-year programming at the University of Texas at Austin.
In their current role, Casey provides one-on-one support to UR’s LGBTQ+ student population. They serve as the advisor for the LGBTQ+ Coalition, a registered student organization, and Lavender Living, a living-learning community for LGBTQ+ students and allies. Casey also coordinates various affinity groups within the SCEI, as well as campus-wide events and programming that center LGBTQ+ communities and topics. They also facilitate the Affirming Space Training Program, an LGBTQ+ cultural competency training for faculty, staff, and students.
