Policy for Cross-Listing Courses with WGSS

A WGSS course should examine the social construction of gender and do one or more of the following:

  • address the intersections of various markers of identity, including but not limited to gender, race,
  • class, sexualities and age.
  • critically examine cultural assumptions about women, gender and/or sexualities; e.g., the gender assumptions in the traditional methodologies, theories and research of particular disciplines.
  • explore the production of knowledge, art, literature, etc. reflecting gendered, raced, classed, etc. experiences.
  • equip students to identify and critically analyze systems of power and privilege.
  • focus on providing information about women and/or sexual minorities, their influence, roles, experiences, history and contributions.

For faculty who would like to cross-list a course

In order for your course to be approved for cross-listing with the WGSS Program, the WGSS Advisory Board needs the following information.  This information should be provided for all new (or newly cross-listed) courses, and whenever a course is significantly revised or taught by a different instructor:

  • a detailed description of your course, likely materials, and teaching method; or a syllabus or proposed syllabus.
  • your statement as to how the course fulfills at least one of the criteria listed above.

The Advisory Board would also welcome any additional materials that might help in assessing the course's suitability for cross-listing with the WGSS program.

Please submit three typed copies (or one electronic copy) of all materials to one of the WGSS program co-coordinators.

Special cross-list opportunities for students and faculty

Some courses not officially cross-listed with WGSS can afford WGSS credit for students who make arrangements with the WGSS coordinator(s) and the course instructor to do readings and/or projects (e.g., their course term paper) on WGSS topics. Such courses are designated "Special Cross-List Credit" or "SCLC" courses.

To determine if a course is eligible for SCLC status, the WGSS coordinator needs the following from the instructor:

  • a copy of the syllabus or proposed syllabus
  • a brief statement detailing what students would be required to do for WGSS credit
  • a brief statement explaining how the course with the additional requirement meets the guidelines for conventional

Once a course is approved by WGSS for special cross-list credit, the course instructor should include a statement describing the WGSS option in the regular course syllabus that is given to all students.

Students who want to take advantage of this option should meet with the course instructor early in the term during which the course is taken to fill out and sign a WGSS SCLC Contract. The instructor should then staple the contract to a copy of the course syllabus and send it to the WGSS coordinator(s) for placing in the student's advising file in anticipation of a graduation audit.

If for any reason the student does not follow through on the commitment, the instructor should notify the WGSS co-coordinators as soon as possible so that the contract can be removed from the student's advising file.
